Black Breath: Razor to oblivion

28/02/11  ||  Daemonomania

Unhollllly VIIIIRGGGGIIIIIAAAANNNNANANNANANANNNN… sorry, apologies, I was busting another mental metal nut over the Black Breath album “Heavy breathing”. A dominating champion of 2010 indeed. And without a doubt the impetus for me to pick up this here EP. I’m not usually the type of fanboi who obsessively purchases every last scrap of material recorded by a band I dig (unless we’re talking about Grave, and even then I must bow to the powers/collections of several forum dwellers). But with so little BB available, any hint of another crusty death fix gathers the ze big shit level urgency.

Is it worth the poopy exigency? Yeah, I guess. There’s a whole lotta rockin’ goin’ on in these four tracks. What I’m missing is the more varied songwriting and heavier production so deliciously displayed on “…Breathing”. All the rest of the band’s signature elements, from the howling vocals to the Entombed guitar tone, are present and accounted for. But the earth-raping slow parts from newer tunes like “I am beyond” are oft sacrificed to insert more of that prototype crust riff. The riff is good, but let’s just say I’m glad “Razor” is not a full-length.

“Fatal error” is probably the best song on here given that it has a few different sections and a sweet breakdown, but happiness can be found in the contents of every oblivious Breath du taketh. Get your jizzy mitts on a copy if, like me, you cannot wait one second more to hear fresh output from Seattle’s newest supergroup.
